South Africa:

• 2000 Population: 40,376,579
• most industrialized and developed country in Africa
• cultural makeup is 76.7% African, 10.9% Caucasian, and 8.9% Coloured (mixed race)

Pretoria:

• capital of South Africa located 30-45 minutes north of Johannesburg
• population: 1,700,000
• season upon arrival: winter...very sunny with little rain (highs in mid 60s to 70s and lows from 30s o 40s)
• 6 hr time difference from EST

University of Pretoria: (www.up.ac.za)

• approximately 27,000 students (largest public university in RSA)
• cultural makeup of student body: 28% black, 57% Afrikaans
• gated campus
• classes conducted in Afrikaans and English
• campus is similar to the "Greek" US environment and very competitive
• very athletic environment (many sports fields)
• very academic environment where students take their studies seriously
• in general, a very religious environment (mostly churched people)

CCP Information

Every summer Campus Outreach Greenville sends students to Johannesburg, South Africa, to minister to college students for about eight weeks.  Team members spend time on the Pretoria university campus in order to meet South African students and share the gospel with them.  The Cross-Cultural Project team also assists the Campus Outreach Johannesburg staff on these campuses with their year-round ministry to South African students.  All students are required to raise their own financial support for the costs of the two-month project.  This year's team is lead by Campus Outreach Greenville staff members Ben and Kaye Creasman.  For detailed information about Pretoria, the TUKS University, South Africa, and who our students will be working with this summer, visit the Campus Outreach Johannesburg website: www.cojohannesburg.org
